Weekend Recap
This past weekend I have to say was siiiiccckk. My weekend started off on a Thursday with my homegirl Drea. We hit up Motif where 80s Babies/Fingerbangerz/Mikentribe were having their first Select Start event. Which I may say was awesome. 5$ drinks on eveerrythiing at the bar, so of course I took advantage of that. We ran into a lot of cool peoples & had a lot of interesting convo. It will be every Thursday so if you missed this one you gotta hit up the next one.
On Friday was SUBZERO! Which is off the hook. There was this massive stage in the middle of South First Street where there were performances and Black & Brown had a fashion. Unfortunately I missed the fashion show but I saw some of my homies still in the gear and it was pretty fresh. I went to all the venues with a lot of interesting artwork. SJFixed Gear had a table out and a lot of the fellas were there representing and doing tricks. I also went to South First Billards and there was chill music and artwork there as well. Before you know it, 10pm had hit and it was time for me to do my door girl duty at The Cellar. The Work-Out Party was throwing a party there with Electro-Indie Dance music. That was pretty dope..definitely a workout! A lot of interesting drunk people passing by off course to give me the entertainment I need while at the door. This is EVERY FIRST FRIDAY!
After I finished doing the door my homies DJ Shea, Ryan & Electric Lady swooped me up to grab some food. They had went to the Blank Club where Flying Lotus was performing along with Free the Robots, Goldenchyld & DJ Basura. Later the nite we finally decided to grab some Iguanas and guess who was there??! Mister Andre Nickatina himself. He had just finished performing at The Avalon and had an awesome suit with snake skin shoes. He asked us to grab a table next to him. Which was sooo random, hilarious and pretty sweet at the same time.
Saturday was BFD! I got there at 12noonish and met up with Electric Lady, Peeps & Jeremiah. We spent majority of our time in the Subsonic Tent which was pretty much a 12 hour dance party. Took me the rest of the weekend to recover. We were only not in the Subsonic Tent when Yeah Yeah Yeahs were performing. When we entered the tent Steve Aoki was djing. He definitely knows how to pump up a crowd. His skills are a mix of Rock & Electro/Dance. I never thought dance parties included mosh pits but I never been to Steve Aoki show. As soon as we got into the tent, we got pushed into the mosh pit! I left those days Freshman year but it was well worth it. Im pretty sure I lost 3 lbs. after that.LOL.
Mike Belm was next and he definitelt delivered. The crowd was definitely calmer and there was more space to dance. One thing I noticed about Electronic DJs is that when they throw shows, they like to have the most trippiest graphics but it never flows. Mike Belm made it flow. He had a mix of When Harry Met Sally, Charlie Brown & Snoppy, Jimi Hendrix, PeeWee Play House plus more! And he ended it with a Snoop Doggs’ “It’s Like This & That.”
We took a water slash beer break and Designer Drugs was up! I was super stoked about them. They brought it full force and Im pretty sure I never danced this hard before. There was this girl that I swore looked just like Agyness Deane. She was on stage video tapping and taking pictures. She went into the crowd and took a bunch of pics of the lil children swearing on the hipster bible. (Literally speaking.) We went to see Yeah Yeah Yeahs in the main stage. Unfortunately were on the lawn and it was too light outside and the screen wasnt up. But the music was beautiful and from what I heard Karen O’s outfit was fabulous. But she always looks fabulous! After YYYs, it was time for DJ AM. I heard he was dope and was excited to see him. He was the only performer who had a big screen so people in the far back can see him. The camera was hooked to his laptop so we can see all of his facial expressions and hand movement of the mixer. He also had the biggest light show in the world! LOL. I felt that his set was was like a mixtape of a revolution of musics’ time from the beginning to the present. He not only hit some Electronic points, but rock, classic rock, surf, metal and hip hop! There was some System of the Down, Queen, and Biggie Smalls! One thing I also noticed was that with my understanding of Electronic DJs, they mainly mix and do mashups but this fool was SCRATCHING! UHH..! My ears definitely got a little orgie.haha. After this set, he definitely is on my list of top DJs.
The finally act was Crystal Castles. I was super excited about Crystal Castles but I heard in advance that the lead singer wasnt that hot live. And I may say, I agree. It was all freakin air. If it wasnt for me knowing the beats of each song, I wouldnt of known what song she was singing. I feel that her voice was definitely not meant for an Electronic band but maybe a classic punk band.
Sunday we rest. No Way. SBDM (South Bay Dub Massive) had their event at Mission Ale House. It started at 5pm with a BBQ. I met up again with the lovely Electric Lady. When you first walk in DJ Luicidal and Abraham had the hip hop and towards the end of the night DJ Luicidal had a little Dance mixes in.hmmm. in the other room was Audio Dru and Nasty Nasty. Nasty Nasty is from Oakland and brought some hot dubstep in the building. Audio Dru delievered and we had our weekly Dub 101. 408 Rockers performed and they were definitely chill and brought the reggae in the building. Outside in the patio was BBQ and downtempo/soulful House music. The DJ was playing on straight vinyl which you rarely see anymore. If you missed this night, no worries. EVERY SUNDAY!
This was definitely fully loaded weekend. And now its time for the real world to kick in get back to business. Monday pffssst! I can handle it.
(Visual appreciation will be up soon.)
